Stories and the overarching idea start coming to the fore once Shinji becomes absorbed into EVA-01. It becomes very quickly apparent, that EVA-01 has a mind of her own. While discussions were taking place, EVA-00 (Rei) and EVA-02 (Asuka) are busy fighting off an Angel, that very quickly incapacitated both EVA units, and EVA-01 has rejected the Dummy Plug, which had previously worked. It's at this point that Kaji takes him aside, and explains to Shinji, his tragic story after he was left an orphan along with his brother and other children, after the events of the Second Impact.Īs much as I appreciated the insight into Kaji's survivor guilt, what struck me most was his comment and understanding that the Second Impact occurred because an Angel made contact with Adam (which will be made clear later). He leaves NERV once again, refusing to ever pilot EVA-01, after another dramatic confrontation with his father, Gendo Ikari. The original volume 7 opens with Shinji, undergoing sync tests with EVA-01, but fighting it every step along the way (recall that the previous volume ended up in a traumatic manner, with the death of one of his close friends). It is safe to say that this 3rd collection (comprising of the original volumes 7, 8 and 9) is where things are starting to come to a head, and things are becoming more and more troubling.
